“Pure Color, Original Elegance” with the Fab Flippin’ Furniture Contest – Dresser Makeover!
“Pure Color, Original Elegance”
Elegance, pure and original elegance that is what my project is about today. A piece that will embrace a modern twist on the Hollywood regency feel of the Art Deco era.
This is my project entry to “the Fab Furniture Flippin’ Contest”, an exquisite furniture flip that turned this drab Facebook Sales Group find into a fantastically elegant piece with Pure & Original Paints. (Sponsored Post)
Pure & Original Paints sent us contestants two quarts of their Classico Chalk based Paint which is available in 118 Pure & Original Paints colors. It is a very matte finish that is water based and has easy clean up, it is lightly washable, environmentally friendly and made with 100% natural pigments. Due to the ultra matte finish this paint has a velvet powdery look to it and when lightly sanded with 320 grit sand paper becomes so silky it is hard not to caress it with your touch.
The subtle differences is exactly what I was looking for to create an exquisite breath of elegance. I had a vision of a mash up of a modern casual feel and vintage Hollywood Regency for this piece.
I began by cleaning, prepping and repairing. With the first coat of Pure & Original Paints I loved how smooth it applied like cutting butter with a hot knife. Once dry it was velvety smooth and the coverage was fantastic with the need of only two coats to completely cover the original wood. I added a third coat because I knew I wanted to sand this to a super soft and silky finish . Even with this larger six drawer dresser and three coats of paint I still have not even used half the quart of Black Truffle Pure & Original Paints sponsored me with. I have about a third left so the coverage is fantastic!
This paint has such a professional feel, a unique powdery look and a silky smooth touch. The paint itself seems to be self leveling as no brush stroke textures came through. With the Black can of paint I began to brush and blend the edges of all the surface areas. A faded vignette of rich color absorbing depth was just what this piece needed. Tone on tone elegance that shades off gradually into the darkness. It was easy to blend back and smoothly fade the connection between the two.
To top it off I decided to add a few more details to this piece. Gold leaf accents the architectural aspects of its construction with the rope molding, bold footing and the edge around the dresser top. This bold burst of shimmer contrasting with the soft casualness of the paint finish is perfect for a modern twist to this 1930s style.
The final details are in the sophisticated yet understated damask stenciling that begins on the front and wraps around the sides disappearing off the back edge like the time that once was the peak of elegance in the Art Deco era. The stencil was painted in the Black Truffle color so when dry the pattern is more predominant along the edge with the Black background and as it inches down the sides it begins to dissolve into the center where the vignette has faded revealing the Black Truffle base coat.
As always it is an honor to be a part of The Fab Furniture Flippin’ Contest community on Facebook as well as a contestant this month with Pure& Original Paints USA as our sponsor.

Stunning!!
Thank you Michelle!
Love the gold details and the way that you added the stencil. Understated and elegant!
Thank you so much Lucy, exactly what I was going for.
Love the two tone application Grace, adds a beautiful subtle elegance. Nicely done!
Thank you Brenda! I am honored you commented. I love tone on tone for that very reason.
My fav style decor Hollywood Regency. Great job. Congrats!
Awe thanks you Fabiola! I love it to… so sophisticated.
This is stunning! I’m in the middle of finishing a pair of black and gold nightstands and seeing your piece validates my color selection! And I’m coveting those knobs! 😉
OH Carrie! I can’t wait to see your nightstands! The knobs are from D. Lawless Hardware. The pulls in this photo are vintage kitchen cabinet pulls.
It looks awesome! I love the stencil, it’s so subtle and adds that, “Oh, wow, look!” factor. Great job!
Thank you Erin! I am not a huge fan of stenciling but for some reason when I am fading colors in and out of one another I like to toss the idea around of adding one in one of the background colors. That way the stencil fades in and out as well. I fondly all it “ghost stenciling” because it kinda fades away and back again. LOL!
I kind of love this! I’m a sucker for leafing – and then you used my favorite color to paint. Beautiful beautiful beautiful!
Thank you Karen! I have always been a fan of the Hollywood grand ol’ age. I think the black and gold is just classy and elegant.
Wow stunning transformation. I love all the amazing details you added the gold and stenciling is stunning.
Thank you so much! I appreciate the comment and I too love the detailing on this piece.
